What you thought of when you designed it?

In recent years the whole old school log movement has really gained momentum, so the goal was a board that surfed and felt like a traditional longboard. The V and tail rocker allow for a traditional stall that washes off speed, once you step up the nose the flat rocker allows the board to carry good speed and the soft rail with single fin setup really locks it in.

What it possibly compromises on then?

V and soft edges offer no squirt from tail manoeuvres, it's also glassed to a minimum weight of 6kg (heavier than standard Sunova’s).

Shape Details and Design Info

OUTLINE: Full nose, parallel outline, area rounded square. Area in the nose always helps with nose riding, especially at lower speeds when you're relying on the nose area to plane on top of the water. The parallel outline holds a straighter line when walking and nose riding, while the wider tail offers more surface area for the spilling wave to hold it down, allowing longer tip time.

RAILS: Low, 50/50 soft bottom edge all the way. The finer low rail makes it easier to drop into a turn, but the key feature is the super soft bottom edge, this encourages the water to wrap the rail and flow onto the deck. Water on the deck stabilises the board and locks it into the wave face better, making it feel stable to walk and nose ride.

ROCKER: Flat nose to performance tail rocker. The flat nose helps with paddle power and carry into waves, while on the nose it just tonks along better, maintaining momentum even if the wave slows down. The extra tail rocker was added for 2 reasons. 1st. A lot of features in the Oldy stiffen and make the board hard to turn, so the tail rocker offsets this and loosens it up again. 2. A good nose rider needs to slow down when you're on the nose, so you can hang in the curl of the wave, nose rocker, extra rocker in general or lastly extra tail rocker will slow a board down. So the goal is to slow the tail down so it drags water, rather than slowing the nose down so it pushes water.

BOTTOM: Flat nose, Roll center to V in the tail. The roll and V slow it down when you stomp on the tail, but that is also part of the whole Log feeling. 

DECK: Slightly flatter. The roll and V bottom bring the apex closer to the deck, leaving the deck flatter.

FIN SETUP: Single Fin. The larger center fin creates a more stable platform to walk on and also holds a cleaner, more direct line while nose riding. As you walk, the board has a tendency to rock a little rail to rail if you're not walking the center perfectly and lightly. The deeper fin resists this rocky wobbly feeling and keeps the board flat and stable.

FINAL STATEMENT: Traditional old school log in both shape and weight.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA’s premium performance construction. Developed over the last 5 years, from the ever persistent pursuit of perfect performance, It is our elite construction for all surfboards under 8’. 

Paraflex is designed to have more spring and return in shorter boards than its Balsaflex predecessor, giving you a positive “more flexible” flex pattern as the board is loaded and unloaded through sections. Flexing and bending right into the pocket and rebounding predictably these boards fly out of sections with so much speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is coupled with a ½” parabolic balsa/composite rail that is then sandwiched between balsa skins top and bottom offering a product with unmatched spring and return.

The bottom is a 1.5mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not completely rigid. This softer area on the bottom cushions the ride of the board, making it amazingly unaffected by chatter, giving you a smooth ride even when conditions are bumpy and average. The deck is a 2mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I beams that connect the glass under the wood, with the glass over. This creates a very rigid strong sandwich structure that is incredibly resistant to compressions, creating a strong and responsive feeling underfoot.

Finished off with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for additional resistance to dings, these boards look even better than they perform. Fitted with a self-regulating air vent that utilizes a slightly permeable Goretex membrane encased in a special aluminum vent designed and engineered by TBF, Paraflex boards are functional and forward-thinking.
